How to Run Nested Hyper-V on VMware vSphere

VMware vs Hyper-V is one of the hot virtualization battles which continues to happen with tight competition. VMware is still a dominant force and Market Leader with a broad and sustainable market strategy. Nested Hypervisor is very famous and common among cloud administrators to learn and evaluate new technology. Procuring hardware for evaluating hypervisor is not really needed in this situation. Nested Hypervisor is the cheap and best option for learning. With Nested hypervisors, we will be able to test ost of the features of the technology. This article will talk about running the Nested Hyper-V on VMware vSphere. Nowadays, You no need to configure any VMX configuration or advanced configuration at VMware Hypervisor level to run nested Hyper-v 2016.

Nested Hyper-V Server  on VMware vSphere

Create Virtual Machine in VMware vSphere and  Select the Guest OS Family as “windows” and Guest OS Version is ” Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (64-bit) and click on Next

In the Customize hardware wizard, Expand Network adapter and Select VMXNET 3 as adapter type. VMXNET 3 is the high-performance network adapter

Expand  CPU under the Virtual Hardware section in Customize hardware wizard in vSphere Web Client. Select the option “Expose hardware-assisted virtualization to the guest OS” in Hardware virtualization. Enabling this option to expose full CPU virtualization to the guest operating system so that applications that require hardware virtualization can run on virtual machines without binary translation or paravirtualization.

Attach Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 ISO image under CD/DVD Drive and Click on OK.

Boot the virtual machine with Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 ISO image and Continue with the installation of Hyper-V Server

Click on Install Now to start the installation of the Microsoft Hyper-V server 2016.
