Create NSX-T Edge Cluster – VMware NSX-T Part 18

NSX-T Edge provides computational power to deliver IP routing and services. We can deploy multiple Edge nodes up to 10 to form an NSX-T Edge cluster. An NSX Edge cluster is a group of homogeneous nodes with common properties that provide high availability for the Edge nodes.. Having an NSX-T edge cluster will ensure that at least one NSX edge is always available.

NSX-T Edge cluster supports up to a maximum of 10 edge nodes in the Edge cluster. We can use one Edge cluster to provide eight-way ECMP paths northbound and another cluster to provide services for tenants. An edge transport node can be added to only one edge cluster. A maximum of 16 Edge clusters can be configured in NSX-T Datacenter 2.4. When configuring any kind of service such as NAT, VPN, etc through a service router, an NSX-T edge cluster is required. In this article, we will see the detailed procedure to create an NSX-T Edge cluster from the NSX-T Manager UI.

How to Create NSX-T Edge Cluster

For creating the NSX-T Edge Cluster,  we need to have a minimum of 2 Edge nodes deployed and Status should be “UP”. I have deployed two Edge nodes “md-edge-01” and “md-edge-01” for this demo.

NSX-T Edge cluster Nodes

To Create NSX-T Edge Cluster, log in to NSX-T Manager with admin credentials. Click -> System -> Nodes -> Edge Clusters -> +ADD

Create NSX-T Edge cluster

Specify the Name, description. Select the Edge cluster Profile from the drop-down. You can use the Edge default high availability profile or you can create one based on the organization’s needs.

From the member type, Select “Edge Node” from the drop-down. Select the deployed edge nodes from the available Edge nodes and Click on the icon > to add the Edge nodes to be added as part of the NSX-T Edge cluster.

Add NSX-T Edge Cluster

Once the NSX-T Edge nodes are selected. Click ADD.

Once the Cluster is created. You can see the Edge clusters created under Edge Clusters. You can see the member type as “Edge Node” and it will also show the cluster profile and No of edge Transport nodes.

Click on the Edge cluster Name to see the Transport nodes (Edge nodes) which are part of the NSX-T Edge cluster.
