Understanding Site Recovery Manager Roles and Permissions

As most of the physical data center turned into the software-defined datacenter, It is very important to assign granular roles and permission to respective administrators to perform their own operations. VMware Site Recovery Manager provides disaster recovery capabilities by performing operations for users. In VMWare SRM, There are multiple operations involve managing objects such as recovery plans, protect the group and performing operations such as replication or powering off virtual machines. Site Recovery Manager roles and permissions allow you to assign the correct roles and permission to the user who can only perform the respective operations.

Site Recovery Manager adds several roles to vCenter Server, each of which includes privileges and permissions to complete Site Recovery Manager and vCenter Server tasks. You assign users to a role to permit them to complete tasks in Site Recovery Manager.

Understand VMware Site Recovery Manager Roles and Permissions

You can assign more granular permissions to users by assigning them permissions on specific Site Recovery Manager objects, including individual array managers, protection groups, and recovery plans. You can also allow users to access specific groups of protections groups, recovery plans, and array managers by assigning permissions to protection group and recovery plan folders, and to all of the array managers for a site.

The Assigned Role drop-down menu includes all of the roles that vCenter Server and its plug-ins make available. Site Recovery Manager adds several roles to vCenter Server. There are 5 different Site Recovery Manager Roles are available in the vCenter Server

  1. SRM Administrator
  2. SRM Recovery Test Administrator
  3.  SRM Recovery Administrator
  4. SRM Protection Groups Administrator
  5. SRM Recovery Plans Administrator

1.SRM Administrator

A user or a group assigned with SRM Administrator role can perform all Site Recovery Manager configuration and administration operations. SRM administrator can also add or modify SRM advanced settings This is the highest privilege to manage Site Recovery manager and all its objects.

2. SRM Recovery Test Administrator

A user or a group assigned to SRM Recovery Test Administrator role can test the recovery plans by running test recovery

3.SRM Recovery Plans Administrator

SRM Recovery plans Administrator is allowed to create, modify, and test recovery plans. This role allows performing all operations related to the recovery plan.

4.SRM Protection Groups Administrator

A user or a group assigned to SRM Protection Group Administrator role can manage and modify protection groups and configure protection on virtual machines.
